What I’m Watching… Only Murders in the Building

Who killed Tim Kono (Julian Cihi)?

That’s the question that an unlikely intergenerational trio of amateur sleuths, who happen to be neighbors in an apartment building on the Upper West Side in New York City, attempt answer in this hilarious murder-mystery from Hulu Studios. Check your streaming service(s) in your home country for availability.

Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) find commonality in their love for true crime podcasts when their neighbor, Tim Kono, is found dead in his apartment. Oliver, an eccentric penniless broadway director, convinces Charles, a washed-up television actor, and Mabel, an aspiring interior designer, to launch a podcast that chronicles their attempts to uncover Tim’s murderer. Their podcast, Only Murders in the Building, becomes an instant hit which garners them a cult-like following from fellow crime buffs, including a few members of law enforcement.

Like most things I watch, I keep an eye out for the storylines that reflect who we are and where we’re going in the Super Age. Whether it’s the generational diversity in the building, the relationship between Teddy (Nathan Lane) and his son, or the later in life romance that develops between Charles and Jan (Amy Ryan), this show has it all.

The show's creators don’t boil down characters into tired (and predictable) generational stereotypes. It does a good job of showcasing older female actors in roles that are realistic too.

In the end, this show is good television. The fact that the team behind it is true to characters of all ages is a bonus.

Give it a watch. Trust me, you’ll like it.
